Cape Coast Castle was built 1665, it was originally built for Dutch, Portuguese and British slave traders. It’s one of 60 different castles and forts established during slavery times in Ghana. Elmina Castle is the biggest castle of them all. Cape Coast Castle was built by the Swedish king so they were the initial landlords of the castle. But now it’s the Ghanean government. It was mostly used for the triangular trade system, to store slaves and to auction them to potential buyers. Slaves would either be sent to North and South America on Liverpool and Bristol ships. Cape Coast used to be the capital city before it was moved to Accra when Ghana claimed its independence. Most of the time, slaves would either be auctioned in the US, the West Indies or at the castle. In the castle, they used to rape women and when a woman resisted, they would throw her in the dungeon. All around, we had a very interesting visit of Cape Coast castle, the most interesting part of the visit was when we visited the dungeons of the slaves.
